So,
you want to know a little bit more about me, eh? Well, just take a look below.
^_^ (data accurate as of Wed Mar 26 03:46:44 2003 GMT).
MUSIC
I
have decided that the best word to describe my taste in music is "eclectic",
although my favourite genres have to be '80s music, current rock and pop, and
the "oldies". I've listed my current favourite artists, songs, and
radio stations below. Once I like a song or band, there's usually not much that
can cause me to dislike them. <G>
A
Bryan
Adams
Bryan Adams has been around for
as long as I can remember. He's from Kingston, Ontario, and is
famous for '80s and '90s classics like "(Everything I Do) I Do It for You",
"Heaven", "Cloud Number 9", and "Straight from the
Heart". His soft rock is easy to listen to, especially for during studying.
Antenne Bayern (Web site)
Antenne Bayern is a Web-radio station
located in Bavaria, Germany, that I discovered about four or five years ago
when I first discoverd Internet Explorer's "Radio" bar. They disappeared
from the listings, but I later found their Web site. I believe that they also
broadcast locally. The station plays a lot of English songs that have been released
here in North America, but also led me to discover some great German and other
European artists.
Laith Al-Deen
Laith Al-Deen is another German
singer that I found on Antenne Bayern. It's hard for me to classify some of
these genres that I enjoy; perhaps that's why I enjoy them so much. It's also
rewarding for me to see how much I understand of the German sung. „Dein
Lied“ was the first song I heard by Laith on Antenne Bayern, and the rest I
found on the Internet: „Bilder
von Dir“, „Jetzt,
Hier, Immer“, and „Viel
zu Weit“ are the ones I listen to most.
B
The Beatles
Everybody knows The Beatles, and
if they don't, then they certainly should come out from under the rock they've
been living for the past forty years. ^_~ I guess I inherited some of my tastes
in music from my father, since I also enjoy a lot music from the '50s, '60s,
and '70s. I can't think of very many songs that I don't like by this classic
band. I have songs by them mostly in English, but a few German ones as a result
of my German teacher in grade 10 playing them for us.
Blue
Another British foursome, this
alternative group started becoming known about a year ago in North America with
the song "All Rise". This is another band that I heard mostly on Antenne
Bayern before on any radio stations here. "Fly By", "If You Come
Back", and "One Love" are other songs of theirs that I can listen
to over and over.
C
Creedence
Clearwater Revival
Another band that I became interested
in after hearing them every so often from my dad, some of their most famous
songs are "I Heard It Through the Grapevine", "Proud Mary",
"Have You Ever Seen the Rain?", and "Down by the Corner".
They're definitely one of the better-known older bands.
D
Deng Li Jun (Teresa Teng) (Web
site)
My friend and I went to see "Rush
Hour 2" in theatre, and he recognised the song "Tian Mi Mi" being
played by the lounge singer on the yacht. We found out that Deng Li Jun, or
her English name Teresa Teng, sang this it, along with many other classic Chinese
songs. She was a beautiful singer, in any language, and died eight years ago.
Céline Dion
It seems that I just can't get
enough of these female Canadian singers. <LOL> Céline is another
one of those people who just have the natural singing talent, and don't require
all of these remixing machines to be famous, who are the "artists"
that I detest in the music industry. She is from Québec, but currently
lives in Las Vegas with a multi-million contract to sing at one of the hotels
or casinos there.
E
Energy103 (Web site)
Formerly "Energy Radio"
[103.9 FM and then 103.1 FM], then "Energy FM" (in association with
stations in Barrie and Toronto), something happened so that the Toronto station
became a country format, Barrie is still called EnergyFM, and the London station
became Energy103. This station features mostly the newest pop and alternative
music, but also occasionally some rock, though FM 96 covers that more thouroughly.
This is my "go to" station while driving.
G
Glass Tiger
I'm
not sure when, it may have just started about a year ago, but I really started
to get back into '80s music. Glass Tiger was one of the first bands that I remembered
with their song "Don't Forget Me (When I'm Gone)". A memory I have
from long ago is my cousin who lived near by scrawling "I Love Glass Tiger"
on the sidewalk with sidewalk chalk. They were usually chart-toppers, and also
sang "Someday".
Glay (Web site)

Yet
another band that I stumbled upon, Glay is a rock group from Japan.
I have MP3s from various albums of theirs. They're very big in Japan, and have
been around for more than ten years. I am currently taking Japanese at school,
so it's interesting now to be able to understand some of what they're singing.
^_~
Great
Big Sea

This
band hails from Newfoundland,
and they're quite popular throughout Canada. Songs such as "Ordinary Day",
"Consequence Free", and "It's the End of the Word" are ones
that I've downloaded. If I ever get more disk space, I'll be sure to get more.
They are proud of their East-coast/Irish heritige, having done some of their
songs in that fashion of music.
Herbert
Grönemeyer

Herbert
Grönemeyer is an artist that I discovered through listening to Antenne
Bayern, the first song being „Mensch“. „Der
Weg“ and „Demo
(Letzer Tag)“ are two other
songs that I've heard and really enjoyed. He has a distinguishable singing voice
to say the least. He is just one of a few German artists that I've grown attached
to.
L
Avril Lavigne

I
think one of my favourite songs by Avril has to be "My World" because it tells
the story of growing up in small-town Ontario. Hers is one of the few albums
("Let Go") that I actually own (I'm an MP3 pirate, I admit it ^_~), and others
I enjoy on this CD are "Complicated", "I'm with You", and "Sk8er Boi". Avril
grew up in Napanee, Ontario, and released her first album before turning seventeen.
I truly think that she is one great Canadian talent, and hope that she doesn't
end up in the "has-been" pile anytime soon.
Gordon
Lightfoot

Gordon
Lightfoot, born in Orillia, Ontario, is a famous folk/rock singer
who is known well in Canada and the rest of the
world. (There are actually three degrees of separation between him and myself!)
He made famous songs like "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgereld", "Sundown",
"If You Could Read My Mind", "Early Mornin' Rain", and "The Canadian Railroad
Trilogy". Last September (2002), he was taken to hospital after complaining
of somtach pains, and had to have an operation.
While growing up, during the summers, Gordon worked
for the Lightfoot Trucking Company in Appin, who were relatives of his (obviously).
They always said that he'd never amount to anything since all he did was play
around with his guitar all the time.
M
matchbox twenty
(Web site)
matchbox
twenty is a rock band that first came to be known in 1997, and are still chart-toppers
with songs like "If You're Gone", "Push", "Mad Season",
and "Bent". Their most-recent song being played is "Disease".
Alanis Morissette
Even
though I don't remember her being on "You Can't Do that on Television",
I do remember the height of her popularity in the mid 1990s. I actually own
her album "Jagged Little Pill" on cassette (since I didn't have a
CD player at the time), and am always happy to hear a new song of hers play
on the radio. "Hands Clean" was a funny incident, since I was telling
my friend that I thought that was the name of the song, and we were both saying
how that's not possible; such a stupid title. <LOL> I am a fan of her
older works like "Ironic" and "You Oughta Know", but "Precious
Illusions" and "Thank You" are great songs as well.
N
Nena
My German teacher in grade 10 played
for us „99
Luftballons“, a song popular from the '80s. In fact, it was on the hit parade
in 1983. Its English translation is probably more popular in North America,
but I have heard the German version once on KOOL FM. On top of that, my teacher
played the German version of "The Wall" by Pink Floyd, and two Beatles
songs auf Deutsch. I have downloaded most of the songs on the above-pictured
album, and occasionally hear her songs on Antenne Bayern.
U
Utada Hikaru
I first discovered Hikaru last
summer when randomly searching for songs on WinMX. Since then, it seems that
you can find her almost anywhere. I have yet to buy an album of hers, but definitely
plan on it. She was born in New York, but grew up in Japan. She's a sensation
overseas, and is currently attending a university in California, bringing her
fame with her. "First Love" was the first song I heard by her, and other songs
of hers are "Movin' on without You", "Precious Love", and "Wait and See". She
has done songs in both English and Japanese, usually the same tune but translated.
She also used to go by "Cubic-U".
(Maxfli, Neil Young, Shaggy, The Others, and U2 to come soon...)
INTERNET FRIENDS
These are just some of the friends that I have
made over the Internet, the majority being fellow Quantum Leap fans.
(to be completed later)
THE
NAME
You may have noticed that the logo of Kraken (from
the video game EarthBound for the
Super NES) appears on a few of my personal pages. I chose it because EarthBound
is one of my favourite games of all time, and this particular creature in the
game was the influence for my Internet handle. Before then, I went by KingMike,
which is hardly original.
